Lambersart

This town owes its name to a combination of three Frankish and Gallo-Roman words: lam, ber and sart, literally meaning ‘free land to cultivate’. A former farming village, Lambersart gradually expanded as different developments sprang up (the area around the racecourse and the Canon d’Or district, for example) and the major industrialisation in the late 19th century (Canteleu). A whopping 3,658 façades are listed in France’s national building inventory. Situated close to the Bois de Boulogne, the Vauban Citadel and the banks of the Deûle, Lambersart is a paradise for walkers. Lambersart well deserves its nickname of ‘Lambersart the Pretty’ with its grand avenues, green spaces and well-preserved heritage such as the Belle Epoque villas and some 5,500 trees. In 1989, it won the title of the first floral village in the department.

Le Colysée

Come and discover Le Colysée along Avenue du Colysée on the banks of the Deûle and opposite the Bois de Boulogne in Lille. This multi-purpose cultural and recreation venue on the banks of the Deûle was designed for Lille 2004, European capital of culture. Set in such peaceful and green surroundings, it’s a popular walking spot for families. From the top of the building, you can enjoy panoramic views of the plain and gardens. Le Colysée and the Deûle interpretation Centre host cultural exhibitions and other entertaining events all through the year.

Le Colysée Contemporary Gardens

Open all year. Visit two gardens: the mosaic garden, which leads on to the plain and was inspired by the aerial photos taken by Yann Arthus Bertrand, and the wet garden, which takes advantage of the near-by water and is influenced by Asian culture with ponds, lily pads and bamboo.

Parc des Charmettes

Further opportunities for a stroll can be found in Parc des Charmettes adjoining the French formal garden with lime tree hedging in front of the town hall, a neoclassical structure dating from 1913. A romantic spot, Les Charmettes is one of the finest parks in Lambersart. Some species like plane, chestnut and beech trees in the park are over a hundred years old. The park also features a sprawling lawn and a children’s playground.
